i must even though i am new to this board i have enjoyed the responce and knowledge. going from a 445 garden tracto to a 4410 hst seem to be a drastic step, my wife thinks i am nuts. however a landscaper just quoted me a price of 10k
to remove a 1/3 of acre of field grass and replace with top soil and new fescue grass seed between getting 6k for my jd 445 and that landscaper convinced me to order the new
4110. now to my question can dig up medium size rocks with FEL with proper ballast in the rear or just spread top soil and mulch? this info would be very helpful i am expecting my new toy the end of march 04. thanks for all of you help so far.

I think we are getting lost here in generalities.... I don't know the difference between a big rock, a large rock and a medium rock so lets try this.
Your FEL will carry up to 800 pounds of rocks at a time. If one rock weighs 800 pounds and it will fit in the bucket it will carry that too.
I have hauled many tons of rocks in my fel, but I don't think I "scooped" even one of them. I pick them up with my hands and put them in the bucket or I levered the really heavy ones into the bucket with a steel bar.
As far as prying the rocks from the ground, you can try lowering the scarifier teeth on your new box scraper to loosen/pry surface rock from the ground.
Then you will most likely have to use your hands or some sort of tool to get the rocks into the bucket for transport. ....

d thanks for your input i did not think the 1st posting about the large rocks got pasted the i realised the 1st posting was placed on a 2nd page so i apoligize for that. as far as scarfier teeth that must be a option i did not see any fel's at the jd dealer? you guys must remeber i have never even used a fel before but i have 2.5 acres that need some attention in the top soil department and replanting someone told me that a 4110 hst could not be used for any excavation i know in a month i will find out for myself, but after the advise you gave me yesterday about
the fel width i changed the order right away even though we do not know one another i do trust knowledge that is why i am asking the questions now instead of running the risk of broked equipment! thaks for you help and knowledge! roboha ....

The scarifier teeth are on the box scraper, not the fel. What Mark is saying is you can use the box scraper to try to pull rocks out of the ground, then use some other method to load them into the bucket. ....

If you do intend to do some "excavation" with your loader, or even if you will just be digging up rocks, you should consider getting a tooth bar for the 53" bucket. I'm looking at a few options for a toothbar for my 53" bucket on my 4110, as well. The general price range seems to be $350-$500. I'm sure someone will chime in with some experience, or a link or picture. Pete ....

I got a Carver toothbar for my 52" FEL. It was around $350 with UPS shipping to Alaska. Got it in 2 weeks. I tried it out on a steep bank that I intended to dig out & install a retaining wall. Even with the ground being frozen the teeth dug in a couple of inches with moderate force. I could see right away that it's gonna work as I'd hoped. ....
